Under 11s Group aim to keep up momentum

On Sunday 13 November the U11s had a great day out at the 2022 Premiership Defenders Cup, hosted by Leicester Tigers at Oakham School. The competition saw 24 Under 11s teams from as far afield as Norfolk, Lincs, Notts and Leics come together to earn the right to play at Twickenham before the Premiership Final in May. Wyggs started the tournament slowly, not helped by the unfavourable weather conditions but quickly found their stride, playing some great rugby against some really tough opposition. We finished the festival with a winning record, having beaten Bingham, Tamworth, West Norfolk and our old friends from Leicester Lions.

As with other RFU tournaments for mini age groups, matches were decided not only by the score on the pitch, but also scores across categories including ‘player respect’, ‘club rugby ethos’ and even ‘parent behaviour’! It was really pleasing to see that Wyggs scored particularly well in these categories, with several of the opposition teams commending our team on their attitude to the game, not least the willing volunteers to play for some other short-sided teams.

Unfortunately, Wyggs weren’t picked as the lucky winners to go through to Twickenham, but all the players thoroughly enjoyed the festival, and from a club perspective, it was great to see the parents pulling together to support the day, with several families donating drinks and refreshments to keep everyone fed and watered!

The focus for the U11s now is to keep the momentum gained from this festival into the remaining fixtures for 2022 before the Christmas break.
