Saturday 4th of September being the first Saturday of the official season, saw the return to League action for the 1st XV. This game against Market Harborough was also the inaugural Ellis White Memorial Trophy contest. Ellis, who sadly passed away recently, was a very popular member of the club having played for Oadby Wyggs from under 6s through to Colts and also went to school with a lot of the Harborough players. The day was a great way to honour Ellis, with the trophy coming home to Oval Park after a 29 -22 victory for the Wyggs. The Trophy was presented by Ellis’s Mum, Tracey and there were fitting tributes in the post-match speeches.
It was great to see a very big crowd there to watch the match which was a further fitting tribute to Ellis. So big thanks all round for the support and do bear in mind the Ellis White Memorial Match will be an annual event!!
In addition to the main event, there was also a closely fought match with Market Harborough for our 3rd XV, with Harborough running out eventual winners of a high scoring 32-28 encounter.
