OWRFC Senior Rugby Update

Since last month’s Newsletter and after what seems like an eternity the Senior Section finally got to play a game of rugby! A mixed squad of 1st, 2nd and 3rd XV players young and old took the field to face a spirited Belper  side and came out on top 56-21

It was great to see some great rugby that showed the benefits of all the hard work over the last 18 months, with training being on and off. It was also fantastic to see so many supporters and friendly faces down at Oval Park for the game, which must have been the biggest supported pre-season game in memory. A special thanks to Paul and Sarah Horner and Duncan and Nikki Orange for the wonderful food after the match and keeping us all from dying of thirst! During the game. 8 under 20s played for the Wyggs, 6 lads made their senior debuts and the starting XV contained 14 out of 15 home grown players- players who have played in either the mini, junior and or colts sections of the club. I wonder how many clubs across the country can compete with such stats? The only exception being Tom Gough. However he scored the first try of the 21/22 season a lovely 55 metre break, stepping four defenders in his way to the try line- so we will let him off!

Going into the season we have a new senior leadership set up with Jack Elliott continuing as first XV skipper, being aided by the experienced Hooker James Brookes and the supportive centre Lewis Jones both who are taking on Vice Captain roles and have already added a lot to the squad from a leadership perspective over the last few months. John Gallagher and Connall Pugh will lead the 2nd and 3rd XV respectively.

Last and not least, we have recently appointed a new forwards coach Jon Beart who has settled in really well and has already shown his passion and goals moving forward for the club throughout the season. We welcome Jon to the Wyggs family and wish him a successful season.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the touch line and in the bar after games. Wishing the whole club a wonderful successful season on and off the pitch on behalf of the senior section.
