Under 8 team finally get to play competitive tag rugby against other rugby Clubs.

With the loss of last season’s competitive rugby, it is a startling fact, that our Under 8s team have only this season been able to taste competitive rugby against other teams!

Team Manager, Ruth Watson says, “The Under 8s have had a great start to the 2021/2022 season!! Having missed the opportunity to play against other clubs last year ,they have really enjoyed some fantastic fixtures both home and away, putting their training and hard work to good use. ”

“We now have a regular team of 16 players and they are beginning to show real team cohesiveness, keeping a solid defensive line, some great tagging and impressive tries. Incredibly some players are now also starting to pass the ball!!”

Ruth calls out two particular highlights this season, “their amazing spirit and positive attitude playing in the driving rain at Keyworth and showing their stamina and determination at their first rugby festival at Syston RFC.”

Welcome to the world of competitive rugby!!!

Under 12s – entertainment guaranteed!!

Seasons greetings from the Under 12’s

As 2021 comes to a close and minds are drawn towards either easing down for the holidays or panicking about last minute preparations for family visits, I can assure you that there’ll be no gifts handed out by the Under 12’s to our opponents during this festive period!

In fairness to the teams we have faced this year, the standard of rugby in our Leicestershire division seems to be better than ever and we are a big part of that. Intensity is the buzz word. Games have defences on top now, with phase play comfortably into double figures on a regular basis. Completing a defensive set without conceding has been greeted with cheers as loud as when a line break is made or when the ball is passed through the hands with wingers scoring in the corner.

A big thanks as ever goes to our loyal, ever supportive parents. Times continue to be tough. Despite this, commutes (from bordering on ridiculous distances in some cases) are made, kits are washed, and bumps and bruises tended to. Even in the most extreme ‘Keyworth Conditions’ the majority shunned the warmth of the bar, choosing to stand ankle deep in puddles braving horizontal rain. Well done.

Special praise though goes to the lads who wear the shirt every Sunday. The players are a credit to the club. Their resilience under pressure and desire to play a positive brand of rugby can never be questioned. The ‘have a go’ attacking mindset is a pleasure to watch and coach and is sure to leave spectators breathless. If you get a chance to come along and watch, do so. Entertainment is guaranteed!

Under 10s – growing on and off the pitch

On the back of a very positive start to the season, the Under 10 players keep on growing their technical skills on the pitch while at the same time developing a great team spirit. We had some great matches and a festival, with lots of fantastic tries (not that we are keeping count!).

We were all looking forward to the Prima Cup preliminary tournament, but that sadly didn’t quite go to plan as we were unfortunately caught out by the weather. While this was very disappointing for our eager players, there is also good news, as the Tigers decided that rather than rearrange the tournament they would have a draw to send teams through to the next round. Our team were drawn and will now have the opportunity to play at Welford Road before an upcoming Tigers match. Bring it on!

Wishing all a great Christmas break and an even better return to rugby in 2022!!

Oadby Wyggs Under 9s enjoying a great day out with Leicester Tigers

Since the start of the season the U9s have continued to grow stronger and stronger, with consistent numbers for both fixtures and training. Since our last update we have had many fixtures, with a number of highlights worthy of mention.

At the Syston Festival, we were able to field 2 teams, both of which played to very high standard. With many strong teams in attendance, Wyggs came out as one of the best and we were delighted with how our kids performed.

We travelled away to Keyworth RFC where we experienced probably the worst weather our team has ever encountered! There was driving rain, high winds and near freezing conditions none of which deterred our players who turned out in force and played amazing rugby! We were super proud of their determination and commitment. Thanks also to the parents who stayed out in the poor weather with us too!

We were also invited to a Tigers Coaching Clinic, which was attended by a lot of Under 9s team. It was a fun-filled day out that started with a coaching/skills session run by the Tigers, followed by a Q&A session with Jaco Taute and Cyle Brink. To finish the day, the players and families made their way to Welford Road to roar on the Tigers as they beat Sale! It was a great day out!

The team has started our contact training ready for the games in the New Year and our kids LOVE IT!!! One subsequent training session finished in a controlled mini game which turned out to be complete carnage…… but every player left the field with a big smile on their face!

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas from the U9’s!

Year 8 School’s Rugby Festival under the Dome at Oval Park run jointly by OWRFC and Leicester Tiger’s staff.

The eagerly awaited Year 8 schools festival finally went ahead at Oval Park on the afternoon of Thursday 2nd December. We were joined by Lottie and Kieron of the Tigers Community Coaching team, who were refereeing some of the games.

The four schools who participated, Wigston Academy, Gartree, Countesthorpe Academy and Castle Mead Academy all arrived with visible anticipation and enthusiasm, and were given a tour of the clubhouse and changing facilities, following an initial briefing.

Given the temperatures it was decided all matches would be played in the dome, giving the club the perfect opportunity to showcase this marvellous facility. After an intense warm up, the matches kicked off, on a touch rugby basis, with each school playing three matches. The energy levels displayed by all players was immense and there was high quality of rugby played. The games were all highly absorbing and highly entertaining to watch!

Following completion of the three matches, and a short period of time enjoying some tackle bag/shield practice, the players received flyers prior to the trophy presentation. Each school received a participation trophy, the Core Value trophy was won by Gartree. The behaviour of all students was impeccable throughout and I would like to take the opportunity to thank all players for their participation, staff for arranging the travel and bringing the players down, as well as to Harry Jinks, Ed Benson and the Tigers staff.
